The Aqaba Project

INTRODUCTION
Donald Whitcomb, Research Associate (Associate Professor) is director of the Islamic Project at Aqaba, Jordan. There have been six field seasons at Aqaba (1986-93). The excavations at Aqaba constitute a major contribution to the little developed field of Islamic archaeology, including medieval Islamic town planning and both economic and political history. A notable aspect of this project is the close cooperation Whitcomb has established with local development and tourist departments; the excavated town is now preserved as a local tourist attraction with a visitor center and a small museum, designed and constructed with Whitcomb's participation using USAID funds. To date the project has been funded by USAID, the National Geographic Society, and private gifts.
Whitcomb's previous excavations at Islamic Luxor and at an important trading port on the Egyptian Red Sea coast have established his reputation as a leading figure in Islamic archaeology.
